David: Embracing Authenticity and Unity in the Leather Community

David Sanford's journey began over a decade ago when curiosity led him to explore the vibrant world of leather culture. Inspired by a friend and fueled by his own inquisitive spirit, David immersed himself in events, built connections, and embraced the lessons and camaraderie that define the community.

His dedication and growth culminated in his earning the title of Mr. Sister Leather 2017, a testament to his commitment and authenticity. As someone who has been sober for over 16 years, David brings a grounded and self-aware perspective to his leatherman identity, which he describes as an enriching facet of his true self. An advocate for inclusivity and evolution within the leather world, David champions unity, especially in supporting trans folx and fostering spaces for all perspectives to thrive. Known for his warmth, openness, and a willingness to mentor others, David encourages newcomers to ask questions, engage deeply, and make their journey uniquely their own

1.What initially inspired you to join and become a part of the leather community?

I became friends with someone who identified at the time as a pup and that peaked my curiosity. So I began going with him to gigs and events and just started asking questions. And everyone I encountered was so friendly and informative. And the more I learned, the more I was intrigued and excited. So I just kept going. And when I won the title of Mr Sister Leather 2017, it was definitely a culmination of all the things I was taught and experienced along the way.

2. How has your journey within the leather community shaped your personal identity or leadership style?

I’ve been sober over 16 years so when I began my journey ten years ago, I had already done a lot of work on myself and my way of living. So the person I was bringing into this experience was my most real and authentic self. Discovering and embracing my leatherman identity just became an added facet to who I already was. It has definitely made me more confident and allowed me to explore things that I never thought I would.

3. What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a leader in this community and how have you addressed them?

I have to say, I personally haven’t faced many challenges with our community here but our COMMUNITY certainly has had its ups and downs. It’s all about being vocal and supporting those who have felt slighted. Making sure the other community members are taken to task if necessary and giving space to new viewpoints and perspectives. I try to use my history and experience to make sure we get better and do better.

4. What goals or changes would you like to see in the leather community in the coming years?

I love the way our community has grown and evolved to include so many different styles of leather. The “old guard” and  “new guard” argument seems to be dissipating slowly but surely. I would love to see us really be able to come together completely and fully, especially when it comes to our trans community and the spaces we share.

5. What advice would you give to someone just starting their journey in the leather community?

Ask questions! Find people who you can talk about anything with. Show up in the places and spaces and get involved. There are many of us out there who want to educate and engage with the new and curious. And don’t feel pressured to look a certain way or do a certain thing. It’s YOUR journey, no one else’s. And when it comes to advice or suggestions, take what you need and leave the rest.

6. How can folx get in touch with you?

I’m on Facebook and IG. David Sanford on FB and pup_teetoe on Instagram. If you want to see me be slutty and naked, I’m on Bluesky too.
